DECA Diners – 2006

Here’s where we went in 2006:

Friday, April 14, 6:30pm

Rincon Latino
5055 Buford Highway, Chamblee, GA
Phone: 770-936-8181

Highway to heaven

It begins quietly enough. Its unassuming origin point on Lenox Road gives little away. A taqueria here, an adult entertainment spot there. Then, as you drive north, the outdoor malls start to crop up. An Ethiopian eatery shares a parking lot with a Peruvian counterpart. Farther up the road, you can browse through Marshall’s after gorging on dim sum.

Somewhere between Clairmont and Shallowford roads, humanity explodes. Auto shops, pawn shops, accountants, acupuncturists, check cashing stores, flea markets, international groceries, signs blaring at you in eight languages, restaurants serving foods you might never otherwise encounter in this lifetime.

You have arrived at the heart of Buford Highway.

It’s always changing. That little Dominican restaurant where you dared to try and came to adore mashed green plantains and swarthy goat stew? Gone. But don’t fret too long. You may be savoring Oaxacan tlyuda or Tibetan momos in the same space before you know it.

They may be a culinary adventure for you, but a taste of the mother country to those at the table next to you. -creative loafing

Pho Tan Tan

This is one of many Vietnamese pho parlors that line Buford Highway in Chamblee. But it’s the only one we know of that serves cha cuon, a fresh rice paper roll filled with a fried shrimp spring roll. Not only that, but also grilled meat, herbs and an inspired spear of mango. Order this roll and a bowl of pho, and you’ll find that the food more than makes up for the plain surroundings. If you’re adventurous, the multi-course Vietnamese menus offer some flavors beyond the norm. ajc pick

Last month was a grand event, 27 DECA’ns attended our dinner party! Biggest turn out to date:-) So many new faces, fresh conversation, and awesome food- this event can only continue to grow, so don’t
wait, RSVP today.

This stalwart standby for noodles and dumplings is as good as ever. This slightly worn dining room is a great place for giant bowls of san shan seafood noodle soup, opalescent dumplings, and mysterious, sticky black cha chiang mein — as satisfying and addictive coffee. -ajc Recommed by Jackie Beck.

Friday, January 13th 6:30pm

Wan Lai
4897 Buford Hwy Ste 104, Chamblee
(770) 216-8587

Wan Lai is a quaint ‘MOM and POP’ Chinese restaurant in a small shopping center off Buford Hwy. The recommendation came from Michele and Jeff Yackel and should be fantastic.
